History: I have always been looking for a better pack. Ever since I started hanging in a hammock, my load was always four or five cylindrical stuff sacks that wouldn't fit in my traditional pack. I ended up strapping the various stuff sacks onto my pack any which way they'd fit. Then, in the winter of 2009, an idea came to mind! I made a double sided M.O.L.L.E. panel, put mil-surplus shouder straps and hip belt on one side, stiffened it with two fiberglass battens, and got a half dozen pairs of cinch straps. Voila! The Molly Mac Pack! This thing was extremely strong. Yet, it weighed very little, even with military surplus shoulder straps and belt! I tried several mesh type bases before a good friend suggested a waterproof laminate consisting of two layers of 1000 denier Cordura nylon heat fused together. It's so strong, I call it "Superman's cape." Each side has 12 rows of PALS webbing. Shoulder straps and waist belt may be attached anywhere on one side. Cinch straps may be placed anywhere on the other side. The Molly Mac Pack is highly configurable. Stuff sacks are attached using pairs of cinch straps. When the Molly Mac Pack appears to be fully loaded (a stack of five or six stuff sacks), you can load another whole stack of stuff sacks by running the cinch straps between items that are already attached. The pack can be reconfigured for different uses. If you sometimes would prefer a pack with a large volume container, just attach a bag. For instance, a large waterproof canoe or pulk bag can be strapped to the Molly Mac Pack. A first responder could organize and mount all kinds of gear on the pack. You could use half of it to carry a stack of stuff sacks, and, on the other half, mount one large bag like you would find on traditional packs. Any military pouch, bag or container that uses the M.O.L.L.E./PALS fastening system can be attached. A Molly Mac Pack will fit inside a pulk sled. I remove the straps and belt to use the Molly Mac Pack on my motorcycle. There are lots of ways to use this pack! During the spring and summer of 2009, some friends from HammockForums.net helped me test the Molly Mac Pack. We ended up making it smaller and lighter. We relocated the stiffener inside the edge binding. We made strong, lightweight shoulder straps and waist belts. We discovered the best way to carry a water bladder and how to modify a stuff sack to work best with cinch straps. By September, 2009, we were ready to offer the Molly Mac Pack for sale as a "made to order" item from Jamestown, North Carolina. - MacEntyre A poem by Thing1: You receive me in the mail To see if I fail. Pack me up tall. Cinch me up tight. I will hold all. Try as you might, You see no flaw. On you hike. You are in awe. I, you like, So you buy, For very cheap, From MacEntyre guy. Long time you keep. On the ground, in the trees, Where ever you sleep, The Molly Mac Pack is the bee's knees! |
