Information about Insultex 
 
We call it "IX"

Insultex is a thin, lightweight, durable insulation. It is quilted with three layers. The middle layer is 1/32" low density foam polyethylene. The outer layers are a nonwoven polypropylene scrim. We abbreviate Insultex, and call it IX.
Insultex cross section
  • 1 square yard of insultex™ is 0.021 inches thick and weighs 1 oz.*
  • 8.8 oz. of insultex™ can float approx. 287 lbs. of body weight
  • Insultex™ has a melting point of 194°F
  • Insultex™ material can be sewn and/or laminated
  • Multiple layers of Insultex™ can be used to provide practically unlimited levels of insulation 
  • Insultex is micro-perforated, water resistant and breathable
  • Insultex is white, almost translucent.

* MacEntyre's measurements have come out to 1 oz per square yard of Insultex, or 1.66 oz per linear yard of fabric, which is 60 inches wide.





Recent testing by the manufacturer of Insultex provided the following results:
  • R-Value of 3 (one layer of Insultex)
  • 'high' Water Vapor Transmission
  • Pliability - no cracking in extreme cold 
  • Water Resistance - held 55cm of water for a 5 hour period
  • UV Resistance - 10 hrs under UV lamps for 21 day period. No cracking
  • Accelerated Aging  - 120°F oven for 3 hours, air-drying for 18 hours. No cracking
  • Flame Spread Classification rating of 10
  • Smoke Developed rating of 25
